Attacked TV journalist not sure of attacker’s identity

SHARJAH — Iqbal Al Tamimi — a journalist of a TV channel — the victim of the Sharjah stalker, told Khaleej Times that she was not sure of the identity of the assailant who attacked her as she was in a shock at the time of the incident. She stressed that she could not confirm that the man who was arrested by the police was the same man who attacked her, as she had seen him only from behind. Al Tamimi said that she was not at the police station when other victims were brought to identify the man who attacked them.

Al Tamimi explained that when she was returning to her house in Al Mina Street in Sharjah at 12.45am, all of a sudden, she was shocked to see somebody holding her ‘abaya’ and stabbing her on the back, using a sharp tool. “I was terrified because I thought I would die and nobody will take care of my four orphaned children. So, I couldn’t see him probably, I only saw the back of a tall, lean man who was not in a hurry, wearing a black shirt.”

She added that she was saved by a Syrian woman and her daughter who called the police and the ambulance who rushed her to the hospital where she was given 20 stitches. She got discharged the same day. “I’m not sure about the identity of the slasher, so I can’t assure that the man who is in the custody of the police is the same person who attacked me, and at the same time, I can’t say for sure that he is not the one either. He could be the assailant who attacked me and the other three women, as there were no more similar incidents taking place any more,” Al Tamimi stressed.

The Khaleej Times spoke to Rehan Ahmed, a worker of a laundry at Al Buhaira road in Sharjah who was an eyewitness to an assault against one of the victims. Rehan said that he saw the man, who was arrested by Sharjah Police, roaming around his shop and the building nearby. When he heard the scream of women in the same building where his shop is, he looked at the entrance and saw the man holding a paper cutter and trying to run away. He and his friend chased him till they caught him near a mosque. But when they brought him to their shop to use the phone to call the police, he managed to run away.

“When I was called by the Sharjah Police to identify the criminal, I immediately recognised him without any hesitation. He also recognised me when he told me “I’m sorry for what had happened,” Ahmed stressed.

The Sharjah Police said they had no comment on the issue because the case had been referred to the Sharjah Public Prosecution for trial.
