Mental health continues to be under-resourced in affluent nations with advanced healthcare systems
Marche Ferdous, a Middle Eastern eating joint, has displayed a notice on its door that reads "People with no money welcome to eat for free".
"We do not ask any questions, we do not judge people," Canadian media quoted the restaurant's co-owner, Yahya Hashemi, as saying.
For Hashemi, who is originally from Iran, helping the needy is an integral part of the Muslim faith, and he is only happy he is able to serve those in need.
According to media reports, four to five meals are given for free every day.
Customers aware of the restaurant's noble gesture even pay a few extra bucks to fund the free meals.
"They come here, they donate $20, $30, $50 Cdn and they say, 'Okay, the next few people are on me'," Hashemi said.
CTV News Montreal quoted the restaurant's chef, Abdelkader Bejaoui, who said the project was "not a big deal".
"It doesn't matter, because at night if you still have leftover food you end up throwing it out, so why not give to those in need?" he said.
