According to police officials, a group of 25 people from an Asian country attacked a gang of five from another Asian country, among whom one died due to stabs in his abdomen.
Witnesses described it as a ‘brutal gang attack’.
Mohammed Sharief, 34, was closing his Al Ghuwair market shop in the Rolla area of Sharjah around 11.30pm when 25 men stormed in with knives and other weapons, according to the owner of a shop in the same area.
According to a police official, the police patrol rushed to the spot as soon as they received a call about the fight, only to find a shopkeeper dead.
Sharief’s body has been shifted to the forensic laboratory while the injured were rushed to Al Kuwaiti Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
According to the police, Sharief bought a soap from a trading shop which belonged to a person from the 25-member gang. The soap was allergic to him and caused irritation on his face. Sharief allegedly returned to the trading shop with five others and threatened to beat up the shopkeeper. After three days, the shopkeeper who sold the soap to Sharief allegedly gathered his countrymen, 25 in all, and attacked the victim. Sharief called for the assistance of four people from his country. The fight went on for more than an hour during which Sharief was stabbed and four were injured.
The police chased and arrested most of the gang members and they have all been detained in Al Gharb Police Station.
Khalil Mattumal, Sharief ’s friend who works in a neighbouring shop, was injured after he rushed to Sharief ’s assistance.
“I went to help my friend when I heard him screaming,” said Mattumal.
“They stabbed me in my chest and my friend was stabbed to death. It was very frightening. A group of more than 20 people got into the shop and started arguing and shouting before stabbing Sharief,” he said.
