There was reportedly a gas leak in one of the portacabins where the worker was preparing lunch. It caused the fire which spread to other parts of the labour accommodation.

The police received a call at 9:15am regarding the mishap and within a few minutes, Sharjah Police, Civil Defence and Emergency Unit teams and ambulance rushed to the spot.

The injured worker was admitted to Kuwaiti Hospital where he received medical treatment for minor burns and was later discharged.

Fire-fighters doused the flames within 20 minutes. They managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the warehouses on the premises which stocked 2,500 gas cylinders of various sizes, sources said.

A Civil Defence source investigating the accident said the factory was found to be violating fire protection regulations.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brigadier Salih Al Mutawa, Director-General of the Sharjah Police, who supervised the fire fighting operation, said the occurrence of three fire accidents in a week indicated that companies were not abiding by fire protection rules.
