According to Uday Tatkare, chief fire officer, Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC), the victims were in the basement of the building, when the fire broke out around 9.30am. Nearly a dozen fire tenders and tankers were rushed to the building and the fire was soon brought under control.

The three persons killed in the fire include Farad Wadia, Eashwar Patel and Shashank Pawar. A Tata Sons spokesman said the group offered its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and relief was being organised. “The authorities are investigating the cause of the incident,” he said. “The Tata group is fully cooperating in the investigations.” Bombay House, located adjacent to the historic Flora Fountain (renamed Hutatma Chowk) is the headquarters for many of the group companies, including Tata Sons, the holding company.

Top directors and executives, including Ratan Tata, the chairman, have their offices in the building.

The historic colonial building was built in 1924.
