New Year Eve firing claims four lives in Karachi

KARACHI - At least four people, including a girl, were killed and more than 30 sustained bullet injuries in different localities of Karachi on New Year’s eve, police and hospital sources said. Most of them were hit by stray bullets fired by revellers who resorted to aerial firing just before the clock struck midnight, heralding the arrival of new year.

After the festivities young boys and girls riding motorcycles without silencers roamed major city streets for hours.
Strict security measures were put in place by the local authorities who deployed hundreds of policemen and Rangers to ensure no untoward incident took place on the occasion.
Police blocked almost all entry and exit points to places popular among revellers, especially the Sea View, with containers to prevent people gathering there.
As a precaution, the authorities had imposed section 144 in the city under which assembly of four or more than four people was banned, whereas a ban was also imposed on carrying fire arms. Apart from injuries caused by indiscriminate firing no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city as revellers dispersed by the early hours of Saturday.
