In June, last year, 300 workers of a private firm in Dubai were left in the lurch, without salaries and food. Their plight was covered by a KT reporter on June 28, 2019. Help came to them when Dar Al Ber Society (DABS) intervened and provided the workers food and rations. From then, until now, 200 workers have been paid 50 per cent of their salary and repatriated to their home countries. One hundred workers, who are still in the country, hope to head home soon. Speaking to us, CSR and charity expert of DABS, Juhi Yasmeen Khan said, "The response we got after the story was published in Khaleej Times was great. Different organisations helped us to give the workers ration. We consider KT as our partner in this journey.
When the incident was brought to light, KT also contacted the employer, who promised to pay the employees, and he lived up to his word. I think it's time for more media outlets to focus on such stories."
One of the workers we spoke to said he was thankful to KT, DABS and The Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in the UAE. "It's almost a year now, and it is only because of the support of all these people that we survived," said Hare Ram.
