Happy National Day everyone, and I know that there's very little that hasn't already been covered in Khaleej Times (and all other newspapers in the country) as part of the countdown to the 45th anniversary. The best we can offer you is, well, food. But not the crumbs - because say what you may about the elusive nature of Emirati cuisine (since it's so often lost in the trail of 'Arab' or 'Middle Eastern' menus), it's complex enough to be served surprise after surprise. Today, when the fervour has died down, let's face it, one would like nothing better than being holed up at home with some scrumptious local fare on the table. So here it is: a list of the choicest dishes, complete with contemporary twists. Bon apetit! Be warned though: you may need to pack your shopping bag with stuff you hadn't bargained for!
