The Federal Electricity and Water Authority, Fewa, is to cut water supply to three major areas in the emirate of Ajman for major development and pipe replacement works.
Mohammed Khalil Al Shamsi, Director of Corporate Communications - Fewa, told Khaleej Times on Sunday that the 24-hour water outage will take effect on Tuesday.
"The affected places include Al Jurf Industrial, Al Hamidiya and Al Raqayeb areas." The water supply is to be cut off to add a major extension on an 800mm diametre water pipeline, he explained.
"The extension will significantly improve the services. Fewa spares no effort in developing its services to bring happiness to the public," he said.
Residents have been urged to communicate with the authority toll free 8003392 round the clock. Fewa, earlier, announced developing four desalination stations over the period from 2016 to 2026 to curb the repetitive cuts and shortage of water supply, mainly to the northern emirates.
"The 270,000 water consumers registered with Fewa in the emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and parts of Sharjah, consume 105 million gallons of water every day. Fewa produces only 55 per cent of this amount of desalinated water," said Mohammed Saleh, Director General - Fewa. "The remaining 45 per cent is supplied by the Abu Dhabi Electricity and Water Authority."
The expected water needs are to hit 250 million daily gallons by 2030, he added. "To meet this demand, Fewa needs to build four desalination stations, worth Dh3.220 billion." Fewa now has 10 water desalination stations. "Five of these are in Ajman, two in Umm Al Quwain, and three in Ras Al Khaimah."
