Three suspects, identified as Sh.Sh; M.S; and A.I, have been charged by the Sharjah Sharia Court of smuggling 9,898 tramadol pills, as well as heroin and opium.
According to the General Department of Anti-Narcotics of the Sharjah Police, the three suspects were found to be smuggling drugs in a boat. When officials searched the vessel, they discovered the tramadol pills and a plastic bag containing heroin, and another one containing opium.
The Sharjah Prosecution requested that the court impose a strict penalty according to the UAE's federal laws for combating drugs. They noted that drugs destroy people's lives and also the economy of the country. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to possession of the drugs, but the police noted that the large quantity suggests they were trafficking it.
The prosecution called for imposing Article 48 of the Federal Law for combating drugs, as well as Articles 6 and 35, which stipulate a jail sentence of between 10 and 15 years and a penalty of not less than Dh50,000 but no more than Dh200,000. The Public Prosecution called for the strictest possible penalties, which may include a death sentence.
