A social worker at Al Qasimi Hospital has been named the social personality of the year during the 7th Social Services Forum on Wednesday. Naeema Khamees was recognised for the intensive social services and sup-port she provided to the needy and abandoned babies.
On the sidelines of the forum, Khamees told Khaleej Times the number of cases of mothers abandoning their new-borns went down from 2015 as compared to 2014. She provided social care to nine abandoned children in 2015, as compared to 15 in 2014, she said.
In 2016, she gave social care to a pair of twin babies, whose mother reportedly attempted to sell them in Sharjah. Abandoned newborns are usually found in a very critical condition as they are delivered at home without any medical assistance.
Babies born out of wedlock are usually found abandoned on random streets and in parks and mosques. The mothers usually flee and are difficult to track. Khamees said she issued medical certificates and facilitated documents for abandoned children so that they could receive medical treatment.
