The Fujairah Municipality will begin demolition work of the emirate's old industrial area from next month, officials have announced. The move is part of a "comprehensive urban plan".
The plan is to turn the area into a "tourist, commercial and service" hub that is in line with the emirate's Plan 2040.
Director of Fujairah Municipality, Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, said the delay in the demolition work is because the area was being sterilised first. The area, he said, is a "breeding ground for insects, rodents and stray dogs, and infectious diseases."
Al Afkham said work is underway in the new industrial area in Al Hail district. Meanwhile, residents of Fujairah have complained about the delay by the municipality in demolishing the old industrial area despite the fact that shops and workshops in the area were moved to Al Hail two years ago.
In their complaint, they referred to the mounds of waste in the area, which pose a threat to public health, especially for residents of the Asian workers' compound.
"A number of drivers dispose of rubbish in the area," said Ali Mohammed, a resident of Fujairah, "The municipality should penalise such litterbugs."
