The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) has fined and warned 1,159 residents caught wasting water in the last eight months.
According to a report issued by the Sewa, inspectors from the authority visited 203,635 sites to ensure that they are abiding by water and power conservation rules.
The Sewa study has revealed an alarming rate of water consumption in the emirate.
The report also revealed that the Sewa installed 524 water conservation devices in 280 mosques and seven government buildings.

Commenting on the report, Dr Rashid Alleem, Chairman of the Sewa, said the authority has in place cooperation mechanisms with all government departments and other institutions to spread awareness about water and power conservation.
Ahmed Al Mehdar, head of technical support at the authority, said the Sewa recently executed plans for curbing water wastage at mosques and government departments.
