If people of Afghanistan unite, then terrorism can be defeated, a top envoy said in Abu Dhabi as the community marked their 101st Independence Day on Tuesday.
"Afghanistan has survived many ups and downs in the last 101 years. We had two wars. Our great nation won both wars to maintain its honour, pride and dignity. Now we are at the forefront of a war on terrorism. I am sure with the blessings of Allah and unity of our people, Afghanistan will defeat terrorism, too," Mohammad Sediq Amarkhil, cultural attache at the Afghanistan Embassy, told Khaleej Times.
The community celebrated their Independence Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies carried out at both missions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. By evening, the Burj Khalifa also lit up in the colours of the Afghanistan flag.
Bilateral ties
Amarkhil expressed appreciation for the UAE's continuous support in different areas. "We have cordial, friendly and brotherly relations with the UAE. These relations are strengthening and growing day by day.
"Afghanistan values its relationship with the UAE. We are thankful to the UAE for allowing thousands of our citizens to live and work in the country, which is their second home."
The envoy also recalled how the Emirates came to their aid amid the pandemic. "The UAE was the first country to send medical aid and test kits to Afghanistan."
He noted that both countries have agreed on establishing a joint cultural day. "A joint cultural Day will be widely celebrated in both countries to promote cultures and deepen our relationship further."
