Traffic accidents caused 122 deaths in Dubai in the last nine months, the police have revealed.
According to the police, 2,258 accidents were reported from January to September this year, in which 1,708 people were injured.
Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the traffic department, said sudden U-turns, failure to leave enough space between vehicles and driving under the influence of alcohol topped the list of violations reported during the period. These violations resulted in 1,543 accidents that caused 77 deaths.
Of these, 75 deaths were caused as a result of 1,506 collision accidents. The police recorded 246 hit-and-run accidents that resulted in 24 deaths. Five people died and 127 people sustained injuries in 107 flip-over accidents.

Sudden U-turns resulted in 461 accidents that caused 24 deaths and 356 injuries. Not leaving enough space between vehicles resulted in 435 traffic accidents that left 25 people dead and 304 others injured.
Driving under the influence of alcohol caused seven deaths from 106 accidents, while not paying enough attention on the road while driving caused 21 deaths in 217 accidents.
Col Al Mazroui said speeding caused 54 accidents that resulted in seven deaths and 51 injuries. Jumping the red light caused 111 accidents resulting in three deaths and 159 injuries. The police said 808 drivers, 602 passengers and 299 pedestrians were injured, and 4,242 vehicles were damaged in traffic accidents during the period.
Of the total number of accidents, 1,223 took place at night and the rest during the daytime.
Col Al Mazroui said the department will be launching a campaign next year to work towards achieving zero traffic fatalities by 2020.
