A new system for light bus driving licences is being initiated in cooperation with driving institutes to improve traffic safety rates across Dubai.

A number of training sessions — comprising eight mandatory theoretical classes, a knowledge test of 35 theoretical questions and a practical road test to be conducted by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) specialists — have been approved in the training module for this specific category of driver licences to be delivered to trainees at driving institutes in Dubai.

The Drivers Training and Qualification Department of the RTA, devised the new mechanism in line with exercising its powers vested by the UAE Federal Driving and Traffic Law.

Hussain Al Saffar, Director of RTA Drivers Training and Qualification, said in case the trainee fails to clear these requisites, he or she will have to attend an additional eight mandatory sessions.

“This will be done in cooperation with driving centres in Dubai, which are keen on providing dedicated tracks for training on driving light buses and conducting various manoeuvres on par with world-class standards,” he said.

He said the RTA is making “relentless endeavours” to improve the principles of traffic safety under the provisions of the Federal Driving and Traffic Law in keeping with its vision of Safe and Smooth Transport for All. “It is also intended to enrich the theoretical and practical knowledge of drivers by honing their driving skills and attitudes, particularly because light bus drivers deal with as many as 26 passengers, which requires us to work towards enhancing their skills of safe and sound driving.” Saffar said this revision is the first step in a comprehensive review process that will be undertaken later.

“We have therefore opted to set out a variety of requirements for licensing light bus drivers which include, over and above the set age limit of 21 years, medical fitness, and passing due tests prescribed by the Licensing Agency endorsed in the training guide for obtaining driver licenses of light buses prepared by the agency,” he said. — lily@khaleejtimes.com
