The Department of Transport (DoT) of Abu Dhabi has begun construction work on the Al Ain City Transportation Management Centre in Al Mutaredh, which is expected to be completed during the third quarter of next year.
This comes as part of Abu Dhabi Plan 2030 and the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP), under the approved Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Strategy for Abu Dhabi, that seeks to establish an integrated and sustainable infrastructure of a transport network that complies with the highest international standards.
The project will house the central management systems for the new Traffic Control System, in addition to the ITS infrastructure which will be implemented via a separate ITS infrastructure development project in Al Ain, according to DoT. The new centre will handle all events and activities related to transport network in collaboration with DoT’s strategic partners including Abu Dhabi Police, Al Ain Police, coordinators from road service patrols, towing and recovery services, representatives of Mawaqif, and coordinators of public transport services, and others.
The centre will also contribute to the collection, analysis and dissemination of transport data across various means of communication for users of all modes of transport to enable them to plan their journeys in advance, it added.
Salah Al Marzooqi, Director of the Integrated ITS Division, said that the design of the new building takes into account utilisation of natural lighting and reduction of energy consumption, earning a level of 2 pearls (according to the Estidama rating system accredited by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council).
The two-story building will cover 2,491 square metres, and will include an operations and control room, data and equipment centre, laboratory for intelligent transportation systems testing, and a training centre.
