The Traffic and Patrols Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police seized 1,469 vehicles in the first quarter of this year and took other legal actions against their drivers who were found speeding up to 200km/h or more on the internal and external roads in the emirate.
The offending vehicles were impounded for posing risks of accidents and danger to other road users.
Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of the directorate, said no leniency would be shown to violators of traffic rules and regulations as “reckless motorists are endangering their own lives as well as the lives of other road users”.
Road monitoring has been increased through traffic patrols and civil patrols of the Traffic Investigation Section on various roads, in addition to air patrols and radars.
“Violators will be detained and their vehicles impounded,” he added.
Brigadier Al Harithi also stressed the need to abide by the legal speed limits displayed on road signs, which were determined after thorough studies of the traffic movement and the density of population in each area. Speed limits have been fixed after examining all reasons behind road accidents in view of the deaths and injuries of people they could cause and the damage to roads and public facilities on which the government had spent billions of dirhams.
Brigadier Al Harithi appealed to motorists to adhere to the legal speed limits. He noted that the risks of speeding include losing control over the vehicle, and failure to avoid others’ mistakes. Speeding also decreases the amount of time a motorist ordinarily takes to correct a wrong decision that would protect him/her from potential road hazards in case of an emergency. He called upon families, society segments, and traffic safety ambassadors to enhance efforts to raise awareness about the risks of driving at a high speed.
The directorate has increased traffic awareness through lectures and exhibitions organised at various universities and schools, with a view to improving the motorists’ behaviour in general and young drivers in particular. To this end, the directorate has launched several new social initiatives, including “You are the backbone of this country” initiative that targets that particular society segment. It adopts a unique approach to inculcate traffic education among the youth, who form the largest and most important segment of society, which is responsible for building the country and preserving its gains, he added.
