The 20-year-old Dane took more than an hour and 40 minutes before finally seeing of Dulko in an unconvincing performance at Rod Laver Arena.

Wozniacki went into the Australian Open with plenty to prove after becoming world number one without winning a Grand Slam.

But her performance raised further questions as she struggled to subdue the challenge of Dulko, the world number 52, who made 38 unforced errors during the match.

Wozniacki broke Dulko once in the first set and twice in the second, losing her own serve just once, despite Dulko having eight break point opportunities. She will now play either Austria’s Tamira Paszek or American Vania King in the second round.
