With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expected to make an announcement on the new title sponsors for the Indian Premier League (IPL) today, it has now emerged that LuLu Group International could also grab a slice of the pie.
The Abu Dhabi-based group might become one of the associate sponsors of the cash-rich league that will be staged in the UAE from September 19 to November 10.
Brijesh Patel, chairman of the IPL governing council, confirmed to Khaleej Times that LuLu Group International had not entered the bidding process for the title sponsorship, but they could be in the race to become one of the associate sponsors. "They (Lulu Group) have not submitted their bid for the title sponsorship. They have not participated in the bidding process," Patel told Khaleej Times on Monday.
"However, they can be one of the associate sponsors. But they cannot be the title sponsors because we have not received any bid from them."
Meanwhile, V. Nandakumar, director, marketing & communications of Lulu Group, said they had not made any decision yet on joining the IPL as a sponsor.
"We have received some proposals from few of the key stakeholders, but are yet to take any decision regarding this," he told Khaleej Times. "We will come out with an official statement if at all we finalise anything."
The deadline for submission of bids for IPL title sponsorship was August 14.
The BCCI is expected to announce the winner today with Tata Sons leading the race, according to Indian media reports.
