The gold-plated medal weighs over 68 kilos.
The UAE set the Guinness record for world’s largest medal, with a medal weighing more than 68.5 kilos and spanning 2.56 square metres.
The medal has a diameter of 1.6 metres and is 7.7 centimetres thick, bearing the name of the UAE sports team Al-Fursan.
According to Dr Obaid Al Ketbi, chairman of Dr. O Holding, it was made according to Guinness Group of Record’s requirements for a ‘medal’ and used gold-plated stainless-steel engraved with Al-Fursan’s logo with a 4-metre-long external strip.
Al Ketbi mentioned that the initiative was meant to highlight citizens’ efforts in contributing to the spirit of human achievement.
He added that in addition to expressing loyalty to the country’s leadership, the achievemnt fell in line with the UAE’s efforts to enhance the fitness of its residents and encourage them to take up a sport.
Al Ketbi established the Al-Fursan team in 2008 with only 13 members, and it now consists of 48 athletes participating in both local and international events.
