An Abu Dhabi school bus driver, who narrowly hit a child crossing the road earlier this year, has had his driving licence taken away from him for reckless driving.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) on Tuesday said it has withdrawn the driving licence from the school bus driver who was driving recklessly as he risked hitting a child as he was trying to cross the road in Al Falah residential area.
"The reckless driver ignored the "stop" sign, on the school bus, which is used to alert other drivers that a bus is dropping or picking up students. Drivers must stop and keep a distance of at least five meters to ensure safe passage of students," DoT said in the statement.

"But when the school bus had stopped as it waited for the supervisor accompanying the child to pass the road to his home, a speeding school bus suddenly approached the child before the supervisor managed to pull him out of harm's way just in time - saving the child's life."
The Department of Transport also issued a warning to the bus driver's employer along with taking other measures against them, demanding that they fully comply with school transport laws and regulations and ensure drivers are disciplined and professional.
The Department of Transport emphasised its dedication to enforcing the law without compromising on security and safety of the students - to establish a safe and sustainable school transport system that meets the aspirations of the wise leadership in securing the highest levels of security, safety and comfort for all segments of society.
DoT called for the concerted efforts of all members of society to be responsible residents and be mindful of the health and safety of others, especially schoolchildren.
As per the law, motorists have to halt their vehicle on seeing the stop signs engaged on school buses, and he who fails to do so will be fined Dh1,000 and ten black points.
The department also issued a warning to the employer of the school bus driver and directed them to ensure that all their drivers strictly adhere to school transport laws and regulations.
