Dubai hit-and-run mystery: 6-month investigation helps nab driver

Dubai - After the motorist fled, he was believed to have travelled outside the country.

A six-month long investigation has helped the Dubai Police arrest a motorist involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a pedestrian severely injured. The motorist ran over the Asian pedestrian as he was crossing a road in Al Quoz industrial area from an undesignated area.

According to a Press statement issued by the police on Saturday, the case was particularly difficult to crack as there were no CCTV cameras or witnesses in the area when the accident happened. The only clue the police found was a broken part from the car that was believed to have been involved in the crash.

After the motorist fled, he was believed to have travelled outside the country. He allegedly also told his son to ram the car into something to explain the damage to his vehicle so as to "cover up any possible evidence of the hit and run".

Colonel Abdullah Khadim Srour, director of the Bur Dubai police station, said after the police arrived at the site, they rushed the victim to the Rashid Hospital. He had suffered multiple fractures and wounds and was in a state of coma for three months, the officer added.

Armed with a broken part from the car found at the accident site, First-Lieutenant Ahmad Khalfan bin Lahej Al Hajri and his team persisted with an investigation that lasted six months. Finally, the team identified the car and the driver who caused the accident.
