During the last six months, more than 3,100 drivers violated traffic rules on the roads in Abu Dhabi.

Major Ahmed Al Shehi, head of the Abu Dhabi Traffic Department, said the new information office will also spread awareness of the Abu Dhabi Police strategy.

The toll free number 600-577777 would provide information on the latest traffic rules in force, record complaints and render assistance to motorists as well as accept 999 emergency calls.

Members of the public can also call or send a fax on 02-419-6563 to know the formalities for seeking a driving licence and renewal of vehicle ownership.

Major Al Shehi pointed out that the department is focusing on public complaints and suggestions to improve the functioning of the Traffic Department in Abu Dhabi.

He urged the applicants to log on to www.adpolice.gov.ae to know about the penalties under the amended traffic law.

The centre will give to the owners of old vehicles information on what to do to cancel car registration, or to export it, or to send the vehicle to the scrap dealer.

Some 67,000 light vehicles, 20 years old or more, would go off the roads on January 1, 2009.
