Showa Modern won the mile-long (1.6 km) Grade One race in one minute 31.7 seconds with Super Hornet finishing runner-up and Smile Jack third from a field of 18 in Tokyo.

‘We didn’t have a good draw and the conditions weren’t ideal but I was aiming to sneak the win anyway. I had confidence in the horse. It was a perfect race.’
The Yasuda Memorial has previously been won by overseas horses such as Godolphin’s Heart Lake in 1995 and the Hong Kong-trained Fairy King Prawn in 2000.
Showa Modern paid out 1,390 yen for a 100 yen wager.
