The five-year-old son of Akbar will make his Meydan debut amid strong speculations that he’s going to handle the tapeta surface without any significant problems.

“He has a touch of class. Good horses do not need to be tried before the race. We are just preparing him from the fitness and tactical part of our work. We don’t need to go to Dubai to find out whether he will be able to do the job on the new surface or otherwise. We will take him directly to the race,” said a confident French trainer Phillippe Barbe, who trains the horse on behalf of The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and will be ridden by the same jockey Olivier Peslier who partnered him to victory in the President Cup. But, it would be the Eric Lemartinel pair Periander and Albar Lotois who would stand for the Barbe’s charge rather than the home team which is led by No Risk Al Maury.

Both horses have ran a cracking race when finished first and second respectively in the Al Maktoum Challenge R-3 for Purebred Arabians Gr-2 over the Dubai Kahayla Classic distance and course.

Ironically, after that race, the handicapper raised Albar Lotois’ rate from 77 to 113, a jump that make the horse to face the challenges of his new class.

Gerald Avranche will reunite with Albar Lotois to replace Gerald Mosse and may probably exchange places with his earlier conqueror on Saturday. The immediate threat will come from Periander who has an outside chance to strike. The former champion of the European Derby seven-year-old son of Marwan has won the 2200m Emirates Championship convincingly in the hands and heels of Adrie de Vries last weekend at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club.

He was also narrowly beaten by Santhaal in the Round-2 of the PA Al Maktoum Challenge Gr-2 over today’s distance and course, but disappointed when well beaten by today’s opponent Nieshan.
