The 32-year-old Heidfeld, who used to race for the BMW Sauber team, will be both test and reserve driver for the new German team which has both Schumacher and Nico Rosberg as the main drivers.

‘I am very pleased to be part of the Mercedes team,’ said Heidfeld.

‘Naturally, I would prefer a place as one of their first-choice drivers, but I am looking forward to being part of the team.’

Having raced from 2000 to 2009, Heidfeld has driven in 168 Grand Prixs and finished on the podium four times.

‘To have Nick as our test and reserve driver further reinforces our team,’ said Mercedes boss Norbert Haug.

Heidfeld could well find himself relatively redundant in the Mercedes pits if Rosberg and Schumacher remain fit when the season begins in Bahrain on March 14 as there will be no test drives permitted after the season starts.
