Haya Award gets 168 applications for
Special Education

The Princess Haya Award for Special Education in its third edition announced that the panel has received 168 nominations this year from various special education centres in the UAE and other Arab countries.

The nominations are in four main categories — Specialist Excellence, Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence, Family Excellence and Institutional Excellence. The four categories include therapists, educators, administration and finance units. Special needs centres, research, projects, campaigns, sponsors, board members and volunteers have also been included in the categories.

Mohammed Al Emadi, Head of the Executive Committee of the Award, stated that the ‘outstanding special educator’ category received 25 applications while the ‘outstanding therapists’ category received 48 applicants.

The outstanding project category received 17 applications while the campaigns’ category received six. Other categories which received nominations are: outstanding website – 3; outstanding family – 14; administration-finance units – 8; special needs centre – 8; special needs supervisor – 6; and special needs research – 9. The category of corporate social responsibility received 20 applications that includes seven nominations applied by government sector institutions in Dubai.

The jury committee has begun the process of evaluation and arbitration to announce the names of the winners at an official ceremony on April 12 this year. Launched on November 2009, the Princess Haya Award for Special Education is the first initiative of its kind in the region. It targets the best models in the special needs sector through various categories according to high international standards. The initiative also aims at encouraging people working in the special needs to excel and set higher service standards.
