The inclusion of Sharjah Airport in the list of carbon neutral aviation hubs is a major boost to the credentials of the emirate and the country on the whole for taking its environment pledges seriously and having a plan of action for a greener future.
It was in 2007, when the Airports Council International launched the accreditation scheme to reward airports that take concrete measures to map, reduce, optimise, and offset their carbon emissions. Over a decade later, only over 300 of the over 17,600 airports globally have achieved carbon neutrality. Most of these airports are in Europe, which has been the leader in devising policies and addressing crucial issues related to climate change and global warming. It has inspired the world and is leading the charge on this front. In the Middle East, the UAE has taken up the baton. The National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050, for instance, sets out not only why the country needs new targets but also how they can be achieved. The country has made progress on multiple fronts with the setting up of solar parks and implementing sustainable policies.
Climate change is among the most immediate threats facing mankind. It is already emerging as a driver of infectious diseases. The Covid-19 pandemic highlights the dangers of humanity's constant encroachment of the dwindling wild spaces. The rising number of infections and deaths because of the coronavirus might have taken our attention away from the issue of climate change for now, but it is for the achievements such as that by the Sharjah Airport that remind us we should not lose sight of our pledges to reduce carbon emissions for a greener tomorrow.
