Tourist denies bid to smuggle 1.7kg of cocaine via Dubai
A 38-year-old US tourist was arrested at Dubai International Airport in June end with 1.7kg of cocaine, a court heard on Sunday.
When he appeared before the Court of First Instance, the defendant denied trying to smuggle the contraband into Dubai. He said he was heading to the Netherlands.
The court will hand down a verdict in the end of the month.
The defendant arrived at the airport just before midnight and the airport police inspectors manually searched his bag and found its bottom to be suspiciously thick.
A police inspector said during the prosecution investigation that 1.7kg of cocaine was hidden in a plastic bag in the bottom of the defendant’s travel bag.
The accused willingly admitted to the inspectors at the airport that he was assigned by someone to carry the drugs to the Netherlands. He was to get 7,500 euros for the job.
