Salem Musa Fayrouz Khamis pleaded guilty to a charge of spying for a foreign country and was convicted by the Supreme Federal Court, landing seven years’ jail.

Court records show the defendant met two people from a foreign consulate in 2008 when he requested help for his Iranian wife. After several meetings, the consulate staff offered to pay the man money in return for certain information.

Authorities were tipped off and searched the suspect’s car and house, recovering documents detailing information about the UAE Armed Forces and its deployment.

The defendant said he had pointed the workers to another army employee when they requested information he did not have access to. —
