Hussey boosts Australia's total in first Test in India
BANGALORE, India- Michael Hussey struck an unbeaten 92 to bolster Australia's first innings on the second day of the first cricket Test against India here on Friday.
The reliable left-hander overcame the early loss of Shane Watson to smash 10 boundaries as the tourists moved from their overnight score of 254-4 to 333-5 by lunch at the Chinnaswamy stadium.
Brad Haddin chipped in with 26 not out in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 74 with Hussey, who contributed 43 in the valuable partnership.
Hussey, who made his Test debut three years ago aged 30, has already scored eight hundreds and 10 half-centuries in 26 matches.
Indian captain Anil Kumble returned with unflattering figures of 0-103 from 34 overs, while spin partner Harbhajan Singh had 1-82 on an unresponsive wicket.
Watson, who walked out with Hussey after Michael Clarke was dismissed in the last over on Thursday, fell in the third over with just five runs added to the overnight total.
The all-rounder (two) survived a confident leg-before appeal off seamer Ishant Sharma, before being bowled by an inswinging ball later in the same over.
Hussey, who was on 49 when Watson fell, took charge with three boundaries off Zaheer Khan, two of them exquisite cover drives and the third a ferocious pull to square-leg.
Australia were helped along by shabby Indian fielding, highlighted by retiring former captain Sourav Ganguly letting the ball to pass through his legs at mid-off.
Ganguly, 36, said on Tuesday he will retire from international cricket after the four-Test series ends.
