An Emirates Airlines flight between Dubai and the Maldives was forced to divert to Mumbai because of a technical issue, the airline said.

"Emirates can confirm that on 26 July 2016, flight EK652 from Dubai to Male was diverted to Mumbai due to a technical fault," an Emirates spokesperson said.

"The aircraft landed and passengers safely disembarked. Emirates apologises for the inconvenience. The well-being and safety of our crew and passengers is of paramount importance."

Various Indian news outlets quote local officials as saying that the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Mumbai Airport after smoke was detected onboard.

According to NDTV, Indian Coast Guard vessels were dispatched to nearby waters to be able to respond quickly if the aircraft had not made it to the runway.
