The ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup semifinal match between India and New Zealand has been interrupted by rain. (Check scorecard here)

The covers are on and players have left the field.

The rain break has once again left social media buzzing with one question: 'What happens if the semifinal is washed out?'

According to the ICC rules, days have been kept reserved for both semifinals -- India vs New Zealand, and England vs Australia -- as well as the final, which takes place on Sunday.

In case a semifinal is washed out and the game cannot continue the same day, it will begin on the reserve day. The game on the reserve day will be a continuation of the match, and won't be a restart.

If the game cannot be completed even on the reserve day, the team that ranked higher in the league stage will proceed to the final.

If the final match is also washed out, and cannot be completed even on the reserve day, then the trophy will be shared by the two finalists. During the final match, too, the reserve day will see both teams continue from where they left, and it won't be a restart of the match.

A super over will come into play in case of a tied semifinal or final.
