Speaking to Khaleej Times, Lieutenant Faisal Jasim, head of the Ambulance and Rescue Mission, said that during the summer officers have been deployed at all beaches in various parts of the emirate to monitor the swimmers and to respond to emergency situations.

The coastal rescue unit has been provided with five more yachts, diving equipments and two more ambulances for them to carry out their duties professionally and to ensure security and safety of the public.

To prevent accidents by youngsters who go water-scooting at Al Mamzar beach, the rescue unit in coordination with Sharjah Municipality had erected fences so that they remained confined in the fenced area and hence posed no danger to swimmers and beach-goers. At the Coral and Al Khan beaches, the rescue unit had erected warning signs to inform the public about the ‘danger spots’.

Lieutenant Jasim attributed the increase in swimming accidents to lack of safety awareness and environmental changes at these beaches.

He urged the public to follow the safety instructions and warnings installed at the beaches and to avoid swimming on windy days.
