The residents of Ajman and Sharjah are concerned about the quantity of the waste produced by domestic use, factories, hospital and clinics.

Speaking to Khaleej Times about the issue, Abdullah Al Amri, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality, said the municipality had been adopting comprehensive environment strategic plans to tackle the problem of the waste treatment.

During this year, the municipality is working on studies and scientific research to come out with strategic plan for the waste treatment project to be executed by German companies which recently signed an agreement with the civic body to solve the issues and to ensure healthy and better environment in the emirate.

He pointed out that the quantity of the waste is on a continuous increase based on the statistics of previous years. In 2005, waste materials increased by 13.52 per cent compared to 2004.

He added that the municipality is making efforts to implement the treatment of medical waste by using advanced techniques which are considered environment friendly.

Ali Abdullah Al Hamrani, Director-General of Ajman Department of Municipality and Planning (ADMP), said as part of its development projects, the ADMP is currently adopting waste management and recycling system to maintain clean environment in the emirate.

ADMP has recently signed agreement with a private company which is currently making studies on the residential and industrial areas before the execution of the project.

The waste recycling and management is one of the department’s major projects that are part of the development plan for the current year.

“The project is aimed at contributing to the emirate’s environment and development of the infrastructure. The municipality is making all efforts to support and launch such public services projects to attract investors to the emirate,” he said.
