With few days left for the 45th UAE National Day, the civic body of Ghalila town to the north of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has decided to mark the auspicious occasion in a different way this year.
Up to 100 Emirati nationals, of different ages, have enthusiastically sewed, installed and hanged the longest and biggest UAE flag on a public road in the country.
Ahmed Lahha, former federal national council (FNC) member, said the 700 meters flag is the longest to be hanged on a public road across the UAE.
"Emirati citizens, old and young, were so keen to take part in this national function which was also supported by the women of the town who prepared food for all participants."
Seeking no help from any foreigner, the Emirati "squad" managed to finish the national project in 8.5 hours, he added.
"This is actually the seventh year for the project to be accomplished by Emirati people since it was first incepted in 2009."
The event was supported by a number of cement companies and crushing plants operating in the norther areas of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, Lahha elaborated.
"Though the flag was installed in some nine hours, it mostly take one full month to finish the job, sew the flag, and later hang it on some 200 posts," he said, pointing out that two cranes and some cars were involved in the installation procedure.
