The decision to cut power supply was taken by the Emergency Inspection Committee set up by the Sharjah Police to ensure that the companies do not violate fire safety regulations.

The Committee was set up under the instruction of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

All the 140 companies had been issued several warnings before the decision was finally taken.

Meanwhile, beginning this week, the Committee has also started its inspection campaign in residential areas in Sharjah to ensure that the buildings have all fire protection equipment and emergency exits to face any emergencies, according to Brig. Gharib Shabban, Head of the Committee and Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence.

Hareb Al Tunaiji, General Supervisor of the Committee, said disconnection of electricity was only the last option exercised by them. “Only when the companies are found repeating the violations despite several warnings that the power supply is cut,” he pointed out.

The Committee, which was established six months ago, has completed surveying the First and Fourth Sharjah industrial areas, and is now working on Sharjah Industrial Area Three and Five.
