A 21-year-old Emirati man, identified as A.S.A., was killed after he rammed his car into a water tanker on the RAK International Airport Road early on Sunday morning. A worker with the Department of Public Works, who was alerting the approaching drivers about the vehicle, sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Col Ahmed Saeed Al Sam Al Naqbi, head of traffic engineering at the Traffic and Patrols Department, RAK Police, attributed the accident to speeding.
"The victim tried to reduce speed and change the lane when he noticed the water tanker, which was stopped ahead for watering plants on the roadside. However, it was too late for him. The car crashed into the water tanker and overturned several times."
The central operations room of the RAK Police, having been alerted of the accident, immediately dispatched traffic patrols, ambulances and paramedics to the site.
"Though the Emirati driver was rushed to the nearest hospital in a record time, he had already sustained serious injuries to which he succumbed shortly after admittance to the intensive care unit."
Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director-General of the Department of Public Works, said their staffers had taken all precautionary measures, including warning lights, while working on the arterial road.
"The worker suffered several injuries and fractures in his leg, and has been admitted to the Saqr Hospital."
Ahmed Al Shehi, manager of public works with the department, said the accident took place at 4.50am. "The flashing lights were placed on a long distance from the tanker so that drivers could easily notice the it from a distance."
