Dubai - An awareness campaign on the dangerous effects of firecrackers has been launched at Al Arabi shopping centre in Al Khawaneej in the presence of Major-General Khamis Matar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police.

Al Mazeina said the Dubai Police are keen on preventing the use of firecrackers as they are a “source of chaos” and can cause fires. He said the police want to discourage the use of firecrackers and have organised lectures in universities and clubs in the past few years to highlight the dangers they pose. He said the police routinely inspect shops to check if firecrackers are being sold.

Brigadier Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Director of the General Department of Emergency at the Dubai Police, said the awareness campaign aims at educating parents about the dangers posed by firecrackers. Using firecrackers, he said, can result in burns, injuries and even death. He said families should not allow children to play with firecrackers. -amira@khaleejtimes.com
