Arab social media gets a big boost with prize launch
The award will showcase important social media initiatives in the Arab world and promote best practices platforms and technologies at a ceremony.
Who would have thought staying connected on social media would have its rewards? This connectivity has the power to tranform society, feels His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who on Sunday launched a prize for the movers, shakers and networkers online.
It’s called the Arab Social Media Award and includes 21 categories for individuals and organisations who use the platform to meet the larger goals of a progressive and prosperous society. Among the awards is one for the ‘Social Media Personality’, the region’s most influential online figure.
“Social media influencers are important change-makers in society. Those who bring wisdom, creativity and positivity are a powerful force for good, because social media are powerful tools for development and progress,” said Shaikh Mohammed.
He spoke of its ‘positive potential’ and ability to change the world and the Arab region in particular. ‘‘We want this prize to add real value to existing efforts to develop all channels and sectors of the Arab media. By honouring online influencers, we stress the great value that an innovative and effective social media presence can bring,” he said.
The award will showcase important social media initiatives in the Arab world and promote best practices platforms and technologies at a ceremony to be held annually in Dubai.
Communication, creativity and impact will be the three criteria for the award where communities benefit and society develops for overall progress and prosperity.
Individuals or organisations from government entities, private sector, blogs, media, sports, tolerance, social service, education, youth, technology, entrepreneurship, economy, politics, health, arts, security and safety, shopping, environment, tourism and entertainment will be picked for the awards.
Shaikh Mohammed has directed The Executive Office to organise and supervise the award and ensure its integrity.
A committee including experts and sector specialists will evaluate applications and select the winner for each category.
