Sharjah airport records 14% growth in passengers
SHARJAH — Sharjah International Airport achieved a double-digit growth in passenger numbers last year compared to previous year, mainly contributed by Air Arabia’s expansion, according to the airport’s authority.
The airport handled more than 7.5 million passengers in 2012 compared to 6.6 million in 2011, reflecting a 13.6 per cent year-on-year growth. Air craft movements also increased by 3.5 per cent to 65,975 during January to December period last year, compared to 63,737 in the same period a year earlier. The airport’s freight handled for 2012 reached 419,116 tonnes.
“Growth continues from the very strong base that was established last year and is largely the result of the rapid expansion of Air Arabia, which is now the first largest source of passenger traffic at Sharjah International Airport, also by the other airlines which launched additional flights to the Airport, additional services by existing airlines, as well as the attractiveness of Sharjah as a business and tourist destination and an efficient transit point,” Sharjah Airport Authority chairman Dr Ghanem Al Hajri said in a statement.
Dr Al Hajri mentioned that the ongoing projects carried out by the airport, will contribute to stimulate the companies operating at the airport and will increase the capacity of the airport to handle more than eight million passengers per year. “We will efficiently manage that growth by augmenting capacity on the ground and in the air while continuing to enhance service levels across the airport. It is a reflection of our commitment to the users and our support during all times,” he added.
“The level of service provided to the airlines, the efficiency and ease of operations, all at a very competitive price, keep many carriers interested in Sharjah International Airport, We fully realise that we have to strive hard to maintain this.
