With all 50 American states and the District of Columbia casting their ballots on Tuesday, election results will come in state-by-state as the day winds on, starting on the East Coast of the country and headed West.

Live result graph: Responsive interactive graphic shows live results of the presidential election, with electoral college votes won.

Here's how the results are likely to come in, hour by hour.
Both candidates will be in New York City, with Donald Trump holding a "victory party" at a hotel in Midtown Manhattan, while Hillary Clinton will be on the other side of Manhattan at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre.

Responsive interactive graphic shows projected results before the election and live state by state results of the presidential election on the night, in a geographical map and cartogram showing weight of electoral college votes in each state, plus breakdown of the vote in each state and a searchable list of state results.

12:01 AM EST/9:01 PM GST: The results of the small town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire - population 12 - are likely to be announced. The town has a tradition of late night voting in order to announce results before polls open elsewhere.
19:00 PM EST/0400 AM GST: Polls close in the key battleground state of Virginia (13 electoral votes) and traditionally solidly Republican Georgia (16 electoral votes).
Initial projections are  also expected in Vermont (3), South Carolina (9), Kentucky (8) and Indiana (11).
19:30 PM EST/0430 AM GST: Polls close in the extremely important - and hotly contested - state of Ohio, which has 18 electoral votes. The state has voted in favor of winning presidential candidates in all but one election since the Second World War.
Polls also close in North Carolina, with 15 electoral votes, and a projection is likely for West Virginia (5 electoral votes).
20:00 PM EST/ 0500 AM GST: Results can be expected in Florida, which, with 29 electoral votes, is the most significant battleground state. This is considered a crucial state for the winner, and analysts have noted that it will be extremely difficult for Trump to win without it. Results should also come in from New Hampshire (4), which is hotly contested.
Projected results will also likely come in from Maryland (4), New Jersey (14), Massachusetts (11), Rhode Island (4), Delaware (3), Connecticut (7) and Washington DC (3), as well as the strongly Republican states of Alabama (9), Tennessee (11), Oklahoma (7), Missouri (10) and Mississippi (6).
20:30 PM EST/0530 AM GST: Polls close in Arkansas (6).
21:00 EST/0600 AM GST: Projections likely to come in from New York (29) and hotly contested Michigan (16) as well as Colorado (9).
Polls will close in Texas (38), Louisiana (8), North and South Dakota (3 each), Minnesota (10), Nebraska (5), Wyoming (3), Wisconsin (10) and New Mexico (5).
22:00 EST/0700 AM GST:  Results expected in Nevada (6) and Arizona (11), as well as Utah (6), Montana (3) and Iowa (6).
23:00 EST/0800 AM GST: Polls close in the West Coast states of California (55), Washington (12), and Oregon (7), as well as in Idaho (4) and Hawaii (4).
It is likely many news channels in the United States will declare a winner around this time. In 2012, the winner was declared at 2315 EST, and in 2008 almost exactly at 2300 EST.
0000 EST/0900 AM GST: In the last two elections, the loser has given his concession speech around this time. It remains unclear, however, whether Trump will concede quickly if he loses.
0100 EST/1000 AM GST: Polls close in Alaska (3). bernd@khaleejtimes.com
