Political violence has returned to haunt the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala ahead of the assembly polls with police arresting 12 party workers in connection with two incidents of violence this week.
While four CPM workers, including branch committee secretary, were arrested for the murder of a Youth Congress worker Sunil Kumar in Aleppey on the wee hours of Tuesday, the others were nabbed in connection with a clash with Bharatiya Janata Party workers in Trivandrum on Monday.
Sunil Kumar, 28, was woken up from sleep at 2am by eight activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, the youth wing of the CPM, and hacked to death. The cause of the attack is said to be the victim's decision to quit the DYFI and join the youth wing of the Congress Party.
The CPM workers attacked BJP activists at Kattayikonam in the state capital after the latter burnt Trivandrum City Mayor V K Prashanth, who belongs to the CPM in effigy, during their protest against the revocation of the city master plan, which was shelved two years back due to protests.
The clash left two policemen and 43 people from both sides injured. The condition of one of the BJP workers injured in the clash is serious.
The BJP had organised a shut down strike in Trivandrum district on Tuesday in connection with the incident.
The national leadership of the BJP has viewed the incident seriously. While a group of party MPs staged a sit-in in front of the Parliament on Wednesday, party minister in-charge of Kerala J.P. Nadda met the Election Commission, accusing the CPM of trying to disrupt peaceful election in the southern India.
