Tragedy struck a 46-year-old butcher in Saudi Arabia when he accidentally placed his right hand in a meat grinder.
The Sri Lankan, an employee with a hypermarket, was pushing meat inside the grinder with his hand instead of a plastic spatula. An error in judgment resulted in his hand being crushed and grinded by the machine.
According to an eyewitness quoted by Arab News, Mohammed Muzzamil was a diligent worker trying to work faster than the machine. In haste, he began pushing the chunks of meat directly with his hand.
The limb was amputated at Riyadh Care Hospital.
Muzzamil, married with two daughters back home, had been working in the butchery for the past 10 years.
Citing sources, Arab News said he will be adequately compensated since it was a work accident.
Accidents of workers losing limbs to grinding machines are not uncommon. Last year, an Egyptian worker had lost his hand working in a meat shop in Saudi Arabia. A similar incident took place in 2014, but the worker's hand was saved by quick action of his colleagues.
