Hyderabad: Well known activist Sunitha Krishnan was targetted by some miscreants near Charminar area in Old City on Friday following a campaign launched by her against rapists who shared videos of their gruesome assault on a woman.

Sunitha, who runs ‘Prajwala,’ an NGO working against trafficking of women and children, had launched the campaign against five men, who had allegedly raped a woman some months ago.

The activist’s car was stoned by some miscreants and police believe that it could be the handiwork of those involved in the outrageous crime.

The rapists reportedly shared the videos of their criminal activity.

It shows the five men, all smiling, taking turns in sexually assaulting the woman even as she pleads with them to let go of her.

Sunitha, who chanced upon the videos, posted them on YouTube on Thursday.  The videos are believed to be at least six months old and were discovered by the activist, who posted the videos online hoping to start a national campaign to shame the rapists, find them and get them punished.

Sunitha, who is herself a rape survivor, tweeted on Friday that her car was stoned in the morning, minutes after she announced her #ShameTheRapistCampaign. On her Facebook page, Sunitha wrote she was alerted to the horrific video by a young man who received it on WhatsApp.

She further wrote: “If you know of anybody who has received any such videos, inform me at <mailto:sunitha_2002@yahoo.com>sunitha_2002@yahoo.com.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Charminar division) K Ashok Chakrawarthy said following a complaint, they have registered a case under section 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code and taken up investigation. Sunitha had parked her vehicle at a college premises near the Charminar bus stop. A police team visited the spot and found that the window screens of the vehicle were stoned, he said, adding, that they suspect it to be a mischief.

“It is a crowded area and 15 to 20 other vehicles were parked in the place. It is not possible for someone to throw a stone and run away. It seems to be a mischief...we are probing the matter,” the ACP said.

Meanwhile, Sunitha posted on her Facebook page: “If goons think they can intimidate me this way...take a long walk boss, I will report come what may, I will track, I will shame and will report..”
