No new date has been announced for the moot which was designed to devise a national strategy to combat militancy and terrorism. Imran is currently in London for medical checkup for the serious back injuries he received after a terrible fall from a lifter at a public rally in Lahore on May 7. He has been recuperating in Pakistan for nearly two months and is likely to return in a fortnight.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah has criticised the decision to delay the conference merely on pretext of absence of one individual. He said Imran could have deferred his London trip and attended the conference which was supposed to discuss a very critical issue.
The PTI had named vice-chairman Shah Mahmud Qureshi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak to represent it in the APC though it expressed scepticism over the utility of such a large conference. Imran had suggested to sit with Nawaz Sharif and army chief to discuss first parameters of a strategy before seeking endorsement of political parties or the Parliament.
In a significant development the prime minister on Thursday visited the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) headquarters in Islamabad to discuss security policy.
The premier was accompanied by his adviser Sartaj Aziz, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Shairf and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
The Director-General ISI — in the presence of Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani — briefed the prime minister on the intelligence agency’s past policies and future plans to curb security lapses.
During this meeting, the civilian and military leadership also discussed issues pertaining to the Afghanistan situation, Nato pullout and domestic terrorism.
