Totally Blown Away

Nevertheless, if thanatology is not your latest plate of clams, I would recommend you blow up two identical balloons, one more than the other.

Here's something interesting: A friend of mine is a professor of forensic pathology, who obviously has nothing better to do when he isn't checking for evidence of a  subcutaneous haemorrhage in the antecubital fossa, or whatever the hell these guys do on their off-days... Anyway, he wants to know if you would vote for someone who was a decorated war hero, a vegetarian, non-smoker, teetotaller and had never had any extramarital affairs. You would? Good, you'd be voting for Hitler.
But the good doc of dead people is also interested in knowing that if you knew a woman who had eight kids, three of whom were deaf, two blind, one mentally retarded, their father an alcoholic and she herself had syphilis - then would you have recommended she had had an abortion earlier, when her second child was born? Apparently, if you said yes, you would have killed someone really great. Who?
Nevertheless, if thanatology is not your latest plate of clams, I would recommend you blow up two identical balloons, one more than the other. And then, without letting any air escape from either, join their mouths together by a short length of tubing. Now watch: instead of air going into the smaller balloon from the bigger balloon as one would expect, the reverse actually happens. That is, the smaller balloon shrinks and the larger balloon expands. Why?

DEAR MS

(Last fortnight's problem was: "What are the next two numbers in the series: 202, 122, 232, 425, 262, 728,." - MS)
Numbered-Daze Dept:
The next two numbers are 292 and 1,031. Take the alternate numbers: 232 - 202 = 30; 425 - 122 = 303; 262 - 232 = 30; 728 - 425 = 303. Following this pattern x - 262 = 30; x = 292; y - 728 = 303; y = 1,031.
It was a simple one. Here, the set of alternative numbers forms two different arithmetic progressions (AP). The comm-on difference in the first AP is 130 and is 303 in the second AP. As such, the next two numbers of the series would be 392 (= 262 + 130) and 1,031 (= 728 + 303).
The sequence follows these numbers 20, 21, 22 and so on grouped in three digits. So the next numbers will be 293, 031.

(The other one was about six people A, B, C, D, E and F trying to balance on a see-saw. - MS)
Saucy-SeeSaw Dept:
(1)D (60kg) and F (20kg) would be sitting together. D would be the last person to sit to balance the seesaw. (2) E (50kg) would be on their side. Reason: moments of B (80kg) at 1m and C (70kg) at 3m at the other end of the seesaw equal to 290kgm. Moments of F (20kg) at 3m and E (50kg) at 1m at the first end add up to 110kgm. Sum of all moments is 400, which is a perfect square, but the seesaw is unbalanced by 180kgm. Therefore, D (60kg) at 3m is finally need-ed to balance the seesaw. A (100kg) does not sit on the see-saw.

(The third problem was: How do kitchen gas lighters work if they use no flints or batteries? - MS)
Light-Your-Fire Dept:
The gas lighter consists of a piezoelectric crystal with a spring-loaded hammer on top, which is attached to a button. On pressing it, the hammer is released and hits the crystal, generating a high voltage that is applied to two metallic clips with an air gap. The electric discharge produces a spark and it ignites the gas.

Can a log of wood be constantly accele-rated to be propelled fast enough through water to cause burn marks on its surface via friction? You know, like small meteors vapourise while going through earth's atmosphere?
