In this part of the world, there's an extra chapter in fashion; apart from Spring-Summer and Fall-Winter (and Pre-Fall, how could I forget?), there's the Eid season. What makes Eid fashion remarkable is how it's been able to straddle contemporary alongside conventional, how it constantly reinvents itself (each year), and how it goes beyond its 'line' of duty and addresses a global, cosmopolitan audience (anyone, anywhere in the world could be wearing offerings from these collections). This week, we showcase some of this year's stunning looks - in anticipation of the festive season that's just around the corner.
Jay Shetty tried out being a monk (yes, he was actually an ascetic for a few years) before he took to preaching work-life mantras and values to corporates and millennials. One of the biggest names in the motivational speaking space today, Jay is young, a vlogger, knows how to speak the lingo (in his inimitable zen style) and, most importantly, walks the talk. Fulfilment, happiness et al - all those life goals we relentlessly pursue - come from being of use to others. But hey, it's not as pedantic as it sounds coming from me. Over to Jay. Turn the pages to meet The Digital Monk.
Whenever I watch The House of Cards (and I replay the seasons over and over again), I can't help wondering about how violence is now insidiously fixated in our psyches. Violence, evil and our "dark sides" have become so commonplace in popular cultures. Is that one reason why we are - maybe unknowingly - falling prey to the magnet (Frank Underwood, anyone?) of violence? We throw open a debate and also try to figure out how we can contain this streak.
In Bollywood, there is a retro on the inimitable Guru Dutt. Travel stumbles upon a few Swiss secrets. All this and much more.
Enjoy reading wknd. and have a great weekend.
