SMS turns 20

DUBAI - The humble short message service, or SMS, has come of age with no sign of slowing down, if last year’s estimated 18 trillion texts are anything to go by.

The cellphone communication which has revolutionised the way people stay in touch — and in some cases date — on Monday reached the ripe old age of 20.

While the Philippines is the nation which purportedly has the most text-messagers, UAE residents are also no strangers to the shorthand communication.

Public relations specialist Vasanti Sundaram says its time for SMS to take a bow. “(As) much as I felt intimidated by the very mention of SMS some years ago, I am a complete slave to the medium, thanks to its power of connecting people.”

In a BBC interview, Finnish text message inventor Matti Makkonen, who in 1992 sent the message “Merry Christmas” to a PC from a mobile phone over the UK’s Vodafone network, said he expected “reliable, convenient-to-use text messaging” to stay around forever — though he said it should no longer be a paid service.
